Green Politics: Volume 26 No 1

Spring 2016

Dear Reader,

This is the season of allusion where presidential candidates prance in front of TV cameras in which the most outlandish statements get the most TV time. We do have however, Bernie Sanders chastising the US in using the Monroe Doctrine to over throw countries in Latin America. For many people Bernie Sanders is there to pave the way for Hilary Clinton. When have we heard such criticism of US foreign policy on TV during a nation-wide debate. This is, if nothing else, a learning experience for the American people, especially the young which Sanders seem to be attracting. Many of us believe that only through 3rd party participation in the political process can we hope to change a very corrupt government, no matter which party wins in November. We have included a statement on Sanders by Jill Stein the Green Party candidate in 2015.

We are again pleased to include in Green Politics the recent publication of the Zero Waste Newsletter. We are also including a recent news release from Green Peace on Fukushima along with the Women’s boat to Gaza, and a short piece on Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Your comments and ideas are always appreciated. You can reach us at http://www. greenparty.org/newsletter/contact_us.php.

Clearly Canned

The can may look clear but there are multiple layers of different kinds of plastic in the shell and many additives inside the polymers. The picture seems to show a tin can-like cover. The one thing that is missing is bisphenol-A, the estrogenic additive that has been banned from other plastics that touch food. This one fact, all by itself, is enough for the marketers to start calling this new product “green”. The petroleum that is mined and refined and polymerized to create the polypropylene – that doesn't count. The design of the cans, to be used once, opened and discarded, that doesn't count. The energy, labor and equipment in factories for producing cans to be soon discarded, that doesn't count. The environmental analysis is entirely trivial but that so often passes the test in this country while the planet continues its slide into "green" despair.

Physician Jill Stein, who is seeking the Green Party’s nomination for president in 2016, has called Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Democratic presidential campaign “wonderful” and stated that the Green Party “will not attack that campaign.”

However, she told RT on Saturday, “But unfortunately he is in a party that has a track record for basically sabotaging its rebels. It has done a good job of doing that in the past from Dennis Kucinich to Jesse Jackson to Howard Dean.
